Here's a good one.  One that will facilitate a ton of controversy, argument, and
possible food throwing (it did all of those here at Pub Headquarters).  What is the
single
greatest sporting event and/or sporting performance in the past 100 years or
so?  Lots came to mind early, a few others filtered in to fill out the brackets.  Some of
the latter candidates were quite worthy in said tournement.  Here's the call...

Thrilla in Manilla
Regional Analysis:
T
ough match up for both John Elway's 98 yard
'Drive' game, and also the incredible Doug Flutie
Hail Mary pass to beat Miami.  In this bracket, the
Pub's vote would have been a tough call between
Bobby Thompson's 'shot heard round the world'
playoff home run, or the Thrilla in Manilla.  For
more on those events, click on the pictures.

Regional Analysis:
This bracket to us seemed harder to determine.
The great finish to the 95 world series at the plate,
Brett Boone's shot off Tim Wakefield to eliminate
the Sox, Mr. October's charisma, Joe Carter
jumping for joy in Toronto, or speaking of running
wild, how about Jimmy V's search for somebody to
hug after NC State triumphed in the NCAA's.  In
the end though, tough to knock Jesse's feat (or
feet)...

Music City Miracle
Regional Analysis:
We'll admit, a head scratcher here.  A tiring
hockey game, maybe the greatest baseball game
of all-time, a controversial Olympic US
nightmare, CRAZY finishes in California and
Buffalo, a catch that ignited a franchise, a Super
Bowl that fell one yard short, or just a miracle in
general.  We think Frank Wycheck is a class
act, but better than Fisk madly waving his shot
fair?

Regional Analysis:
The Pubmaster personally oversaw this
region.  We thought our array of sporting
events was excellent with Olympics, golf,
boxing, horse racing, college hoops, baseball
moments, and the NFL all represented.
Honestly, we'd be happy with any that made
the final four, and of course am partial to
the 1986 World Series, where Mookie
Wilson's routine grounder in game six
(above) made history...

All-Time Best Sporting Event or Performance

Games
The Final Four:

What Jessie Owens accomplished at Berlin, just prior to
Hitler's run through Europe, surpassed sport.  That
performance was paired with the NY Giants win in the Super
Bowl, courstesy of Scott Norwood's last play FG going 'wide
right'.  Click on the photos for more.  Below, our field of 64
pitted the Music City Miracle against the 1980 USA hockey
team beating the powerful USSR team in Lake Placid.  It's the
NFL vs. the world games for all the dough...
