It has been awhile since the editor at Whitey’s Pub (WP) got off his ass, and organized the many thoughts of our Pubgoers. Enough is enough. Several items on the docket for this column, so buckle up and enjoy the ride...
Iraq Again, the pointless police action is in our headlines. Invariably, it eventually dominates the conversation at the bar. Most recently, the slant is on whether or not we should set a deadline for the withdrawal of our troops.
Republicans, touting the party line and further backing what may be the worst administrative decision since getting involved in Vietnam, say we should stay the course, back our troops, and are against a deadline. Democrats (whom will say the exact opposite in every case) are trying to force the President’s hand. Old news.
The bar keep says, let’s go.
This ill-advised war is unwinable by our western standards. It doesn’t matter if we pull out today, tomorrow, or in ten years. Whenever we do decide to go, anarchy will follow. The question then is this. How much do we want to pay for this temporary 'police state' in lives, tax dollars, and ‘face’ among our neighbors?
At this point, saving face is out. The argument that by leaving Iraq will show our defeat is a foregone conclusion. This effort was a lost cause the moment we decided to move forward.
Is that the fault of our troops? You certainly hear that on a daily basis. Any utterance of leaving Iraq, or that Iraq is a lost cause- is a slap in the face to our brave troops. That’s bullshit. That is as much bullshit as those folks that sport bumper stickers on their cars saying, “I support our troops”. EVERYONE wearing red, white, and blue supports those making the sacrifice. True American’s on the other hand, admit when our assets are being used wisely, or unwisely.
Another tag line we’ve all been bombarded with lately relates to establishing an exit date. “Do you really want to provide the enemy with such valuable information?” Why not? What would the enemy do with this intelligence? Would they send more suicide bombers out the next day or less? It would make sense to hang low until the occupiers are gone, no? Let’s see, take on the most powerful military in the world head on, or pick a fight with a 5th grader.
Of course, killing as many of us as possible also plays into a mindset that we can’t even fathom. The Pub will deduce however, that the enemy (whoever they are) is doing everything they can on a daily basis to kill us already. A massive onslaught after finding out we’re blowing dodge? WP thinks not.
The other side of that argument we believe carries more weight. If a deadline is established for our departure, don’t you think it would light a little fire under the asses of the good guys to take a stand, take control? Don’t you think that even everyday Iraqi’s would feel the pressure to become involved in their own destiny, garner a weapon, stand a post? Until all Iraqi’s are prepared to play a role in their destinies, we are all just watching water pass under the bridge. In the meantime, the blood of our sons and daughters is being spilled, and cleaned up with the monetary blanket financed by every hard working American worker in this country.
Enough is enough. Declare victory, set the date, and get out of harms way. Place smaller units in neighboring ‘friendlys’ or on carriers, and end the charade.
“A hundred years ago you people were running around here cutting each other’s heads off. In another hundred years you’ll be doing the same.”A telling quote by Matt Damon (Bryan Woodman) in Syriana. Showing exactly whom we are dealing with in the Middle East. You can’t win.
30 Rock Another problem we are having at the pub will require little verbiage. Simply put, we are having a hard time determining if Tina Fey is hot or not.
For a list of whom we are sure are hotties, click here!
Imus There really isn’t much more that needs to be said about the whole Don Imus vs. Rutgers vs. Sharpten/Jackson vs. common sense argument. Imus made a short, off color remark and got nailed for it. It happens everyday. He has paid the price for it with his job, because the radio program’s sponsors caved into pressure by various minority groups.
It is absolutely their right to do what they please with their advertising dollars. The fact that they’ve made hand over fist money by supporting the Imus Radio show for years is neither here nor there. PC doesn’t always result in a healthier bottom line however, and that may hit home harder then they anticipated. Some of the major sponsors that bowed to the pressure are listed below.
Staples General Motors Sprint Nextel GlaxoSmithKline Procter & Gamble PetMed Express American Express Bigelow Tea
If you feel firing was legitimate, that the three words Imus repeated on his program (“nappy headed hos”) did irrevocable harm to the Rutgers women athletes, black people, women, the ice cream man, whomever, that’s your choice.
If you feel Imus faux pas was greatly overblown and made you want to vomit, try this. Boycott the above companies. Show them that in appeasing the minorities you piss off the masses. Ask them to kindly explain that to their shareholders, when the next quarter’s P&L report is substantially lighter then the previous.
Nothing will change however. Rap artists will utter far worse and The Rev Al or Jessie won’t raise an eyebrow. Black on black crime in America’s cities will continue. Shawn Kemp will keep having illegitimate children.
Gravel Gertie Since the oldest member of the Whitey’s Pub staff continually refers to herself as “looking like Gravel Gertie”, we thought it helpful for anyone under 92 years old to present the visual.
